A Guide to enjoying an international holiday with your kids

A Guide to enjoying an international holiday with your kids

Embarking on an international holiday with children can be both thrilling and challenging, but the logistics of keeping little ones entertained and content in unfamiliar surroundings can be a test of patience. We've compiled a guide to help you make the most of your international adventure with your kiddos.

Planning is everything!

Destination Matters: Choose a destination with family-friendly activities and amenities. Look for places with parks, child-friendly museums, and attractions that cater to various age groups.

Babysitting on holiday is a thing: Most family-friendly hotels and resorts offer babysitting. Your Travel Counsellor will guide you on the best option for your needs.

Time Your Flights: Opt for flights that align with your child's sleep or feeding schedule. It can help minimise disruptions and make the journey more comfortable for everyone. Overnight flights are often the best solution for South Africans as the little ones can get a good night's rest before arriving at their destination.

Pack Wisely

Snack Attack: Bring a variety of snacks. Familiar and favourite snacks can be a comfort in an unfamiliar place. Having an assortment on hand can save your sanity during unexpected delays or when 'acceptable' snacks aren't available.

Entertainment Arsenal: Pack a bag of entertainment essentials for the flight. Think colouring books (also acceptable adult entertainment!), travel-sized board games, and electronic devices loaded with child-friendly apps and movies for those long flights or waits at the airport.

Extra everything: Kiddies get into messy situations, and extra clothes will keep everyone comfortable and happy.

Things get lost: Little ones often have a special blanket or toy from which they're inseperably. Pack a dublicate or acceptable replacement, just in case.

Always charged: We applaud families that have device-free holidays, but for the rest, invest in a power bank and keep it close on flights and long journeys.

Sanitise: No need to worry about the germs when you pack hand sanitiser. Buy a travel-sized hand sanitiser, attach it to the nappy bag or backpack, and sanitise after using public facilities.

Don't forget the wet wipes: Perfect for sticky hands (theirs and yours).

Establish routines but don't be a slave to it,

Sleep Sanctuary: Create a comfortable sleep environment for your little ones. Familiar bedtime rituals can help ease them into a restful night's sleep, even in a new setting.

Flexibility is Key: While routines are essential, be flexible. Embrace the spontaneity of travel and allow for deviations from the norm. The unexpected can often lead to delightful surprises.

Safety, always

Health Precautions: Familiarise yourself with healthcare facilities at your destination. Although resorts often have doctor's on call, it's wise to travel with a basic medical kit. It's important to check if vaccines or special precautions are required.

Identification and Contact Information: Keep identification on your children and have a plan in case you get separated. Ensure your little ones know your local contact information and the name of your accommodation.

Explore Together

Kid-Friendly Activities: Research and plan age-appropriate activities. Whether it's a visit to a local zoo, a beach day, or a hands-on museum, having activities tailored to your children's interests can make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Educational Adventures: Turn sightseeing into a learning experience. Engage your children with the history, culture, and geography to make the trip fun and educational.

Let them capture the moment: Depending on their age, give them a disposable camera to take their own photos during the trip. You'll be surprised by the things they capture.

Give them options: If your schedule allows it, let them choose a day's activity, such as going to a local park, arcade or a day by the pool.

Play and learn: Give them downtime to reflect on the day's adventures by drawing a favourite moment and even keep a diary if they're old enough.

Make time for yourself

Recharge your energy every day and take time out for yourself. That could mean that you and your partner watch the little ones in shifts while the other enjoys a massage or a run on the beach. Use the babysitting services and enjoy a romantic lunch away from distractions, or hop on mopeds and explore the city or countryside while the kiddos are in safe hands.

Embrace the Adventure

Expect and embrace unexpected situations that will probably lead to unforgettable family memories. Cherish every moment with your kids, but also plan some time for yourself.
