AI is everywhere these days, from helping us draft emails to suggesting our next holiday destination. With tools like ChatGPT and travel AI bots, getting instant trip recommendations has never been easier. But before you let AI plan your entire getaway, let’s talk about why you can’t always rely on it—and why having a real human travel expert still makes all the difference. When AI Gets It Wrong… AI is great at processing data and making suggestions, but it has no real-world experience. It pulls information from the internet (which, as we know, isn’t always accurate or up-to-date). Here are just a few ways AI can lead you astray: - Fake or outdated hotel reviews: AI might recommend a "luxury beachfront resort" only for you to arrive at a construction site with a great view of scaffolding. - Flight connections that defy physics: AI may suggest a 30-minute layover in an airport that takes 45 minutes just to get through security (looking at you, Heathrow and JFK!). - Non-existent attractions: Some AI-generated itineraries have included "must-see landmarks" that don't actually exist—like a "hidden waterfall in Paris" (spoiler: it’s just a fountain). - Visa and entry requirements: AI won’t always tell you if your passport needs six months’ validity, if you need a visa on arrival, or if certain vaccinations are required for entry. Why a Travel Counsellor (aka, a Real Human) Is Still the Best Choice - Experience & Expertise: We’ve travelled extensively, know which airlines have the best service, and which hotels truly deliver on their promises. AI can’t sip a cocktail on a rooftop bar in Santorini to tell you if it’s actually worth it—but we can! - Up-to-Date & Personalized Advice: We stay informed on ever-changing travel rules, airline policies, and destination updates. AI might still recommend a restaurant that shut down in 2022! - Real Support When Things Go Wrong: Missed a flight? Hotel overbooked? AI isn’t calling the airline on your behalf. But your trusted Travel Counsellor is! - Tailor-Made Itineraries: AI will churn out generic trip plans, but we take time to understand your needs, preferences, and budget to craft a trip that’s truly your dream getaway. The Verdict? AI + Human Expertise = The Best Travel Experience AI is a great starting point for travel inspiration, but when it comes to seamless planning, stress-free bookings, and real-time support, nothing beats a dedicated Travel Counsellor. So before you trust an algorithm with your next adventure, chat with an expert who actually knows the world—not just what’s on the internet! Let’s plan something amazing—the right way!

As a travel agent with years of globetrotting experience, I've seen how the right packing choices can transform your travel experience. Whether you're jetting off for a cultural immersion in Asia, a sun-soaked escape in the Mediterranean, or an arctic adventure, packing smartly is the key to a smooth journey. Here's a curated list of travel essentials to ensure you're prepared for any overseas adventure. 1. Documents and Digital Copies Your passport is your most important travel companion—make sure it's valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Don’t forget: - Visa (if required). - Travel insurance details. - Printed copies of your flight itinerary and accommodation bookings. - International driver’s permit (if you plan to drive). - Copies of all key documents stored securely online or in your email for easy access. **Pro Tip**: Keep all your documents in a waterproof folder or pouch for added security. 2. Medications and Health Essentials Your health is your wealth when traveling! Pack a basic first-aid kit with: - Prescription medications (with a copy of your prescription). - Travel-friendly painkillers and antihistamines. - Anti-nausea tablets or motion sickness bands. - Hand sanitizer, masks, and a small pack of disinfectant wipes. **Pro Tip**: If you're heading to a remote destination, add a small medical dictionary or download a translation app to describe symptoms in the local language. 3. Clothing and Layering Must-Haves Pack versatile, lightweight clothing that can be layered to suit varying climates. Essentials include: - Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate outerwear. - A scarf or wrap (handy for chilly flights or visiting religious sites). - Quick-dry clothing for humid or wet climates. **Pro Tip**: Roll your clothes instead of folding to save space and minimize wrinkles! 4. Travel-Friendly Gadgets and Accessories Tech tools can simplify your trip, but only if you pack wisely: - Universal travel adapter and a small power bank. - Noise-cancelling headphones for long flights. - Lightweight, lockable suitcase or travel backpack. **Pro Tip**: A foldable daypack is perfect for excursions and keeps your hands free during sightseeing. 5. Cultural Sensitivity Items Research the local customs to avoid faux pas. For example: - A sarong or modest clothing for temple visits in Southeast Asia. - Slip-on shoes for destinations where removing footwear is common. **Pro Tip**: Learning a few phrases in the local language goes a long way in showing respect and connecting with locals. 6. Currency and Payment Essentials Don’t rely solely on credit cards—some destinations prefer cash. Pack: - Local currency in small denominations. - A travel-friendly credit card with no foreign transaction fees. - A money belt or hidden pouch for safekeeping. **Pro Tip**: Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid your card being flagged for suspicious activity. 7. Personal Comfort and Entertainment Long flights and layovers call for entertainment and comfort: - Travel pillow; eye mask and ear plugs for better in-flight sleep. - E-books, podcasts, or a journal for downtime. - Snacks, because you never know when hunger will strike! **Pro Tip**: Reusable water bottles with filters are great for staying hydrated while reducing plastic waste. Final Thoughts Packing for an overseas trip doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The goal is to be prepared for the unexpected while keeping things light and functional. Remember: it’s not just about the destination, but also how you experience the journey. If you need tailored travel advice or assistance planning your next trip, feel free to reach out. After all, making travel seamless and memorable is what I do best! Bon voyage, From your Travel Counsellor Karin Livingstone ‘Offering Personalized Travel, Exceptional Service’

I travel regularly and I often hear complaints while on the aircraft that seats are being pushed back or kids are kicking back of the seats and this made me think that there is NO handbook on the ‘etiquette’ of traveling on board a plane. Travel is meant to be exciting, not frustrating yet as soon as you are on the aircraft there is always a grumpy person or two. The crew on board need a medal as they do this day in and day out. Here are a few key things to consider and use this as a ‘travel etiquette handbook’ to keep everyone happy on board (including yourself). 1. Respect the Boarding Process The boarding process sets the stage for your journey, and adhering to its sequence is vital. Pay attention to announcements and boarding group instructions, patiently waiting your turn. Rushing to board out of turn only creates unnecessary chaos and delays, adding stress to fellow passengers and airline staff alike. 2. Mind Your Carry-Ons Overhead bin space is a precious commodity on any flight. Pack your carry-on luggage thoughtfully, ensuring it fits within the airline's size and weight restrictions. Once onboard, stow your bags efficiently, leaving ample space for others. Avoid hogging overhead bins with multiple items or oversized bags, and refrain from shifting belongings mid-flight to prevent disturbances to fellow passengers. 3. Consider Your Seatmates Sharing a confined space with strangers for hours on end requires a certain degree of consideration. Respect the personal space of your seatmates by refraining from encroaching into their area or reclining your seat abruptly. Engage in conversation respectfully, being mindful of differing preferences for interaction. And if sleep is on your agenda, inform your seatmates before reclining your seat and do so gradually to avoid startling them. 4. Practice Good Hygiene Maintaining personal hygiene is paramount, especially in close quarters. Pack essential toiletries in your carry-on, including hand sanitizer, tissues, and breath mints. If you feel under the weather, consider wearing a mask to minimize the spread of germs. Additionally, be mindful of strong scents that may affect those with sensitivities, opting for subtle fragrances or none at all. 5. Keep Noise to a Minimum The cabin of an aircraft can be a cacophony of sounds, from the hum of engines to the chatter of passengers. Minimize noise pollution by using headphones when listening to music or watching movies. Keep conversations at a considerate volume, mindful of those trying to rest or work. And if you need to make a phone call, use the designated quiet areas provided in some aircraft or step into the galley. 6. Follow Crew Instructions Flight attendants are there to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the journey. Respect their authority by adhering to their instructions promptly and courteously. Whether it's fastening your seatbelt, stowing your tray table, or complying with safety protocols during emergencies, listen attentively and cooperate without hesitation. 7. Exercise Patience and Courtesy Traveling inevitably comes with its share of challenges, from delays to unexpected turbulence. Maintain a calm and patient demeanor, refraining from taking out frustrations on fellow passengers or airline staff. Extend kindness and understanding to those around you, fostering a positive atmosphere amidst any adversity. 8. Leave the Cabin Clean As your journey comes to an end, take a moment to tidy up your seating area. Dispose of any trash in the designated bins, returning seatbacks and tray tables to their upright positions. Leaving the cabin clean and orderly not only demonstrates respect for the aircraft and its crew but also sets the stage for a pleasant experience for the next set of passengers. By observing proper etiquette while flying is not only a matter of common courtesy but also essential for creating a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone onboard. By adhering to these principles of airplane travel etiquette, you can navigate the skies with finesse, making each journey a smooth and harmonious one. Would love to hear your thoughts on these points. Bon voyage!

Cruising is more popular than ever, and as we step into 2024, the cruise industry continues to evolve to meet the changing desires and needs of travelers. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or considering your first voyage, it's essential to stay updated on the latest cruise trends to make the most of your sea adventure. Here are the top cruise trends to watch for in 2024: **1. Sustainable Cruising:** Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of cruise travel. In 2024, cruise lines are making significant strides in reducing their environmental footprint. Look for ships equipped with cutting-edge eco-friendly technologies, from cleaner propulsion systems to onboard waste recycling programs. Plus, many cruise lines are working to eliminate single-use plastics, conserve energy, and promote sustainable shore excursions. **2. Remote and Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations:** Cruisers are increasingly seeking unique and less-traveled destinations. Expedition cruises to remote regions like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Arctic are becoming more accessible. These adventures offer a chance to explore untouched natural beauty and witness wildlife in their natural habitats. **3. Health and Wellness at Sea:** Cruise ships are transforming into wellness retreats. Expect to see expanded fitness centers, more holistic wellness programs, and a focus on healthy dining options. Some cruise lines even offer onboard spa treatments, yoga classes, and mindfulness sessions to help passengers rejuvenate while sailing. **4. High-Tech Cruising:** Cruise ships are becoming increasingly high-tech. You'll find advanced digital amenities such as keyless cabin entry via smartphones, interactive apps for managing your onboard experience, and state-of-the-art entertainment options, including virtual reality experiences and augmented reality tours. **5. Culinary Excellence:** Cruise dining is evolving to rival top restaurants on land. Expect to find an array of gourmet dining options, specialty restaurants, and celebrity chef partnerships. Many cruise lines are also incorporating local flavors and cuisine from the destinations they visit, creating a culinary adventure on the high seas. **6. Multigenerational Cruising:** Families are cruising together more than ever, and cruise lines are catering to this trend. Ships now offer a range of family-friendly activities and facilities, including water parks, kids' clubs, and dedicated spaces for teens. This trend makes cruising an attractive option for family reunions and vacations. **7. Themed Cruises:** Cruise lines are increasingly offering themed cruises that cater to various interests, from food and wine to music, wellness, and even special events like world championships or cultural festivals. These cruises allow passengers to indulge in their passions while exploring new destinations. **8. Smaller Ships and River Cruises:** Smaller ships and river cruises continue to grow in popularity. These vessels offer an intimate and immersive experience, with the ability to access smaller ports and explore inland waterways. It's a trend that's particularly appealing to travelers looking for a more relaxed and authentic cruise experience. **9. Luxury Cruising:** Luxury cruise lines are pushing the boundaries of extravagance. Expect more inclusive offerings, such as all-inclusive pricing that covers excursions, fine dining, gratuities, and beverages. Passengers can look forward to spacious suites, personal butlers, and exclusive shore experiences. **10. Solo Cruising:** Cruise lines are making it easier for solo travelers to embark on sea adventures. Look for more solo stateroom options, reduced single supplements, and onboard activities designed for solo travelers, making cruising a fantastic choice for those seeking both solitude and social interaction. As you set sail into 2024, the world of cruising has never been more exciting. With these top cruise trends in mind, you can embark on your next cruise adventure knowing you'll experience the latest and greatest the industry has to offer. Bon voyage!

In an age where technology and the internet have revolutionized the way we plan and book our travels, the idea of working with a Travel Counsellor might seem old-fashioned. Why bother with a human travel agent when you can book your trips online with a few clicks? The answer to this question lies in the unique benefits a Travel Counsellor brings to your travel planning experience. In this blog, I will explore why booking with a Travel Counsellor can be a superior choice compared to online reservations. 1. Tailored Travel Experiences: Travel is not one-size-fits-all. Each traveller has unique preferences, needs, and expectations. Your personal Travel Counsellors will take the time to get to know you, your interests, and your travel goals. They can craft personalized itineraries, recommend experiences that align with your interests, and ensure your trip is truly yours, not a generic package. 2. Expertise and Knowledge: Online travel agencies provide vast amounts of information, but it can be overwhelming. A Travel Counsellor, on the other hand, is a trusted expert who has likely visited your chosen destination and can provide first-hand insights and recommendations. They stay updated on the latest travel trends, local regulations, and hidden gems that might not be easily found online. 3. Time and Stress Savings: Planning a trip can be time-consuming and stressful when done online. Booking flights, accommodations, tours, and ensuring all the details align can be daunting. A Travel Counsellor streamlines the process, handles the logistics, and alleviates stress, allowing you to focus on the excitement of your upcoming journey. 4. Exclusive Access and Perks: Travel Counsellors often have access to exclusive deals, upgrades, and perks that are not available to the general public. These can include better flight options, room upgrades, or special amenities that can enhance your travel experience. 5. Personal Advocacy: In the unfortunate event of travel disruptions, a Travel Counsellor acts as your advocate. They can assist in rebooking flights, rearranging accommodations, and resolving issues, giving you peace of mind during unforeseen circumstances. 6. Security and Reliability: When you book through a Travel Counsellor, you're not left to fend for yourself if things go awry. You have a reliable point of contact who can help resolve issues or provide guidance. Online booking platforms may leave you hanging in case of problems. 7. Convenience and Flexibility: Travel Counsellors offer a level of convenience that online booking can't match. You can communicate your preferences through various means, whether in person, over the phone, or via email, and get assistance whenever you need it. 8. Long-Term Relationships: Building a relationship with a Travel Counsellor means having a go-to professional for all your travel needs. They can keep track of your preferences, assist with future trips, and offer loyalty rewards to make your travels even more enjoyable. While online booking platforms have their merits, the unique advantages of working with a Travel Counsellor cannot be overstated. Their personalized service, expertise, and dedication to ensuring your travel experiences are memorable set them apart. So, the next time you plan a trip, consider the benefits of choosing a Travel Counsellor - it might just be the best decision you make for your next adventure.

I visited the UK in mid May 2018 (Spring time). I travelled with Emirates Airlines as I love their seating and entertainment on-board the plane. Plus, they also offer a two-piece concept for my luggage which means that I can take my normal checked-in bag and my road bicycle (which is packed into a bike box). This trip I skipped visiting London for the very first time and I headed straight down to Dorset (South Western England). I stayed for two and half weeks in a little village named Lulworth Cove and I was so surprised at how beautiful this part of the country side is. Dorset has a wealth of historic Castles, fantastic English styled houses and gardens to explore, it has beautiful coast lines including Durdle Door which is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is world renowned for being one of the richest heritage sites for its pre-historic remains. It’s possible to join a fossil hunting walk and you could find your very own piece of dinosaur, or even discover a new species! As soon as I arrived I unpacked my road bike and over the next two weeks I got to explore some of the most beautiful scenery. While cycling and exploring, it felt like I was in a glossy magazine with the long green rolling hills, bluebell bedecked woodlands, open fields dotted with beautiful white wild flowers and slow running streams. It was just so beautiful and so difficult to explain in words, you have to be there to experience it. My Recommendations: From my amazing experience I recommend when visiting England to consider visiting Dorset, it’s only a three-hour drive from London. It’s great for all types of travellers, from thrill seekers to soul searchers to gentle travellers. Dorset ticks all the boxes. I do recommend travelling from May through to September as this is their Spring / Summer time. I also recommend hiring a car and staying in accommodation based in either in Wool, Wareham or Lulworth Cove. The type of itinerary I would suggest would be: Day 1: Visit parts of the Jurassic Coast which is a world heritage site namely Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door Day 2: Lulworth Castle and Tank Museum Day 3: Corfe Castle and Studland Beach Day 4: Monkey World (Sanctuary) Day 5: Swanage beach and Swanage Steam Train journey That's just off the top of my head, there is so much more to visit for example the New Forest, Stone Henge and many other villages which you just can't miss out on. Dorset Country side was such a delight and I can’t wait to go back next year. If you would like to visit then please get in touch with me.

If you want to experience Skiing, Cruising & the Northern lights, then this ONE trip is for you. All three were on my bucket list and I was so excited to be able to combine them all into one trip, it doesn’t get any better than this. Its recommended to travel January or February as this is one of the best times of the year to see the Northern lights and there is only approx. 4 hours of daylight. You would need to travel to Norway and fly into Tromso and out of Kirkeness (north east of Norway). Tromso is ideal for seeing the northern lights and has a modern mix of outdoor activities e.g. Skiing, vibrant nightlife and fantastic places to eat local food. Skiing in Tromso: If you would like to ski in Tromso, I recommend flying in a few days earlier before the cruise departs so that you can enjoy skiing at Tromso Ski Resort, enjoy the local cuisine (reindeer and seafood) and walk around the beautiful city. Tromso Ski Resort is easy to access by bus from town and they also have flood lights for night time skiing. Please note the food and alcohol prices can be steep when you are travelling on South African Rands. Cruising on the Hurtigruten: The condensed history of Hurtigruten is that their ships originally transported goods, post and people to many little villages along the coast. The Hurtigruten ships have now been converted into smaller cruise liners and their ships are more intimate than the average cruise liner. Our ship MS Nordkapp carries only approx. 550 people and it has its own expedition team. On-board you have all the normal luxuries that other cruise liners have but on a much smaller scale. Our cruise departed from the town Tromso and sailed for two nights to Kirkeness stopping along the way at villages where goods and post are still being delivered. Onboard the MS Nordkapp there are three different restaurants, a Multe bakery and ice cream bar and a sauna and fitness room. Out on deck you can enjoy the view from one of their two Jacuzzis. The ship also has a cozy bar at the front of the ship and additionally has a large compass area with reception, a tour guide, conference room and shop. There are excursions along the way for example the North Cape is the northernmost point of the European mainland. Northern Lights Experience: The best way to experience the Northern Lights would be on a Hurtigruten cruise, as the ship cruises through the magnificent natural fjords which means there is no city lights, and this therefore increases your chances to see the Northern lights. The benefit of this cruise is that when the Northern lights do appear (it doesn’t matter what time of day or night) the MS Nordkap will announce it to the whole ship over the intercom. This happens even in the middle of the night while you are sleeping, so you can jump out of bed if you want to see the lights. If you are not keen to be woken up in the middle of the night, you just turn your intercom off and you can sleep through the night. Our best viewing was 3 am in the morning, I jumped out of bed, threw on as many layers of clothing that I could find in 10 seconds and ran outside. Just reminder its minus 15 degrees Celsius so it’s pretty cold but we had the best show of the whole trip. So, over a period of 3 days, 2 nights I was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights 9 times (that is no exaggeration). I highly recommend this trip on your bucket list as it was a trip I will never forget.
